The Toys That Made Us, created by Brain Volk-Weiss, is an American television series shown in the form of a documentary. The series focuses on the history behind the making of famous toy lines, the struggles they faced, and what their condition is now. As of now, the series has a total of 12 episodes, four episodes each in all its three seasons. The first season began on December 22, 2017, on Netflix and focused on the Barbie, He-Man, G.I Joe, and Star Wars toy lines. The second season featured LEGO, Hello Kitty, Transformers, and Star Trek, airing on May 25, 2017. The third season threw light on the popular franchise Power Rangers, My Little Pony, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which was released on November 15, 2019.

The Toys That Made Us was released on Netflix as a documentary series, which became immensely popular as soon as it was released. The series aimed to rekindle the love adults of today had towards toys back when they were children, which proved to be a success based on the feedback the show received.
During an interview with Inverse, in 2019, the creator, Volk Weiss talked about how if there ever was a fourth season, he would love to feature companies such as NERF, Matchbox, Smurfs, and Cabbage Patch Kids. He also mentioned that if he could, he would also include Hot Wheels and Superhero Toys. Despite this, however, Netflix is yet to make any official announcement regarding this, but this could also be due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which put a halt on various different businesses throughout the globe. An announcement for a fourth season may drop anytime this year.

The Toys That Made Us shows the process and struggles behind the making of several well-known toy companies with each episode throwing light on a different one. The series has three seasons each featuring episodes.
The first season in particular focused on well-known and highly popular toy’s that top markets worldwide. The first one showed a toy based on the ever-famous series Star Wars. It shows how, in 1997, the creator of Star Wars toy Lucasfilms was rejected by the leading toy manufacturers Mattel and Hasbro. He however manages to sign a contract with a small toy producer, Kenner Products. As of now Star Wars Toy racks by 14 billion dollars every year.

The next episode threw light on the Barbie Doll franchise which has been around since 1959. Ruth Handler, Mattel’s co-founder, wanted to create a doll that would stand out and be unique in the vastly male dominating industry. He took inspiration from the Bild Lilli Doll from German and introduced Barbara Millicent Roberts, commonly known as Barbie. Now the franchise has its section in almost every toy store with several movies being released each year.
The third episode focused on how Star Wars had risen in popularity in no time and toy producers all around the world wanted to create something that would stand on par with it. Frank Frazetta’s artwork inspired the creation of He-Man toys.
The last episode of the season showcased the creation of the G.I Joe franchise. The idea for the toy came from the Cold War during Reagan’s era and the creators wanted to portray an American Hero who could put an end to it. The franchise is now well known for its movie which is well-loved by fans worldwide.
The show gave people an insight behind the toys that gave adults many happy memories when they were children and rekindled their fondness for them.
