A Japanese action-packed anime with a historical theme will be the topic of our discussion today. This anime will interest you if you have a keen interest in learning about some actual ancient history or historical heroes. You might not be able to recognize its potential otherwise. In this anime, all of the historical figures like Rasputin, Jeanne d’Arc, Saint Germain, and Oda Nobunaga are represented. The anime we are talking about is Drifters, as the title suggests.
Drifters is a Japanese seinen anime with an adult cast, historical events, samurai characters, and an isekai theme that falls under the action, adventure, comedy, and fantasy genres. The anime was adapted from a manga of the same name, which was written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano and was first serialized in Shōnen Gahosha magazine. It started out as a serial publication on April 30, 2009, and six volumes have been released so far.
The manga enjoyed a fair amount of success; it sold 1.5 million copies in five different languages and received numerous nominations in addition to the awards it had already won. Seeing this, after a few years, the television adaptation of the manga was announced by Studio Hoods Drifters Studio, the studio solely dedicated to this particular anime. It was produced by Yasuyuki Ueda and Yoshiyuki Fudetani, while Kenichi Suzuki and Hitomi Ezoe took up its direction. There are two video games based on it released so far that are liked equally by the fans.
The anime, with its full title, is known as Drifters: Battle in a Brand-new World War, as the basic storyline for the show goes like – summoning different historical heroes in this world to fight. The program features a lot of humour. Whether they are character exchanges or historical inside jokes, they are always present. Even a small amount of fantasy racism can be found in the show, which some viewers may not find particularly funny. On the other hand, the anime’s action is so precisely on point that you feel completely satisfied. When it comes to turning battles into a spectacle, it is no laughing matter. The series really shines when the pacing quickens, and you’ll feel like all the buildup was worthwhile.
The frame-by-frame adaptation of the manga is very satisfying, and the manga aesthetic of the show is fairly accurate. It has a special method for changing its personality characteristics. The soundtrack of the show is pretty entertaining in addition to the action scenes and character design. It is creative and stylistically appealing. During the battle scenes, the OST and soundtrack have a hardcore instrumental tone that is incredibly entertaining. Even when the dialogue becomes overly silly at times, the character’s vocal mannerisms are audible throughout the entire show.
If you have a sense of humour, you will find this to be well worth your time. But Drifters will probably come off as more of a chore to watch if you take it too seriously. We’ve got you covered if you finished watching it and felt like you wanted more. We will talk about the release of Drifters season 2, as well as the potential plot, cast, the release of the trailer, and the platforms it will be streamable on.
Drifters Season 2 Release Date

There has been no official announcement regarding the show’s new season. It has not been cancelled or renewed up to this date. Season one of the show came out on October 7, 2016, and with 12 episodes each 23 minutes long, concluded on December 23, 2016. There were even 3 independent OVAs (Original Video Animation-the content that is not taken up from the source material but written by another writer) following the first season, but thereafter we never heard anything about the new season.
The show has a rating of 7.90 on MyAnimeList, which is very impressive and affordable enough for the studio to resume its work on it for the next season. There are only 3 volumes of the manga left for the second season because the first season covered the first 3 volumes, considering there are only 6 volumes of the manga to this date. As a result, the source material might not be sufficient to create another season. The author and the production team, however, are both diligently writing more content, so that is good news.

Drifters Season 1 Recap

The story is set in a world where not only humans but all types of other characters also exist, like elves, dwarves, and hobbits. Currently, there is a war going on in this world, and every race needs something or someone to fight for them. A group of bad people called “Ends” want to kill everyone, including “Drifters”, and want to rule the world. When the show starts, they are already shown to have gained control of a certain part of it. To save them and their race, Toyohisa summons different powerful and strong warriors from history for help and to become part of the Drifters, which also includes Shimazu Toyohisa, who was wounded from the battle he was fighting at the time of his summon. He later becomes the natural leader of the group due to his sharp thinking and leadership skills.
Drifters reveal more about the backgrounds of its characters as the plot develops. Even though some of the drifters do harbour regrets, it is exciting to see that they are still willing to move forward. With the Black King standing out as the most perilous of them all, the antagonist of the story, End, also has some very fierce characters. Ends appear to have supernatural abilities, which the Drifters do not. Ends are capable of feats that Drifters cannot, as they are not limited by technology, weapons, or their own inherent abilities. And hence, we see the different battles between these two while they also try to move forward in their lives and win.

Drifters Season 2 Story

The exact story for the new season can not be predicted as there is no official announcement regarding it from the studio of Drifters, but if it gets adapted from the rest of the manga, then the show will pick up right from where season one left off. But as we discussed earlier, the manga might not be enough for the new season, so there might be some of the original content written by independent writers. In that case, predicting the story is somewhat of an impossible task. The guys from Schlüsseldienst Berlin Lichtenberg are waiting for the new season.
